EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Prince Edward, later known as King Edward VIII, dressed in the uniform of the Colonel-in-Chief of the Prince of Wales's Own Scinde (Sindh) Horse. The image dates back to around 1920, during a time when the Prince held this esteemed military position. The Scinde Horse, originally comprised of two regiments - the 35th Scinde Horse and the 36th Jacobs Horse - was amalgamated in 1922 to form the 14th Prince of Wales's Own Scinde Horse. Prince Edward's association with the regiment began in 1911 when he was appointed as its Colonel-in-Chief. The Prince's dedication to the regiment was evident in his frequent visits to India, where the Scinde Horse was based. The regiment, which traced its origins to the British Raj, was renowned for its bravery and discipline. The Scinde Horse's connection to the British monarchy went back to the late 19th century when the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, was the first Colonel-in-Chief of the 35th Scinde Horse. The tradition continued with his son, Prince Edward, who took great pride in his role as the Colonel-in-Chief of the amalgamated regiment. The uniform worn by the Prince in this photograph reflects the regimental colors and insignia, including the distinctive turban and the regimental crest featuring a tiger. The image stands as a testament to the Prince's military prowess and his deep-rooted connection to the Prince of Wales's Own Scinde Horse.
