Prince George giving homage to King Edward at coronation

The church paids its homage and then came the turn of Prince George (future King George V). Prince George knelt, and then the King raised him and kissed him on the left cheek. Then the King, crowned in all magnificence, stretched forth his hands and drew the Prince to him, and twice they kissed again. Date: 9 August 1902

EDITORS COMMENTS
On the historic day of King Edward VII's coronation on August 9, 1902, at the hallowed Westminster Abbey in London, the monarchy's grand tradition of paying homage to the monarch was continued. After the church and other dignitaries had paid their respects, it was the turn of Prince George, the future King George V. With a solemn expression, Prince George knelt before his father, King Edward, who then raised him and kissed him on the left cheek in an affectionate gesture of acknowledgement. The King, resplendent in all his coronation regalia, reached out and drew his son to him, and they exchanged two more tender kisses. This poignant moment marked the passing of the crown from one generation to the next, a ceremonial act that has been repeated throughout history to affirm the continuity of the monarchy. The image captures the deep bond between father and son, and the sense of history being made in the hallowed halls of Westminster Abbey.
