EDITORS COMMENTS
Prince François-Ferdinand-Philippe, Duke of Orléans and Duke of Joinville (1818-1900), was the third son of King Louis-Philippe I of France. Born on February 10, 1818, in the Palace of Fontainebleau, Joinville grew up in the shadow of his elder brothers, who were expected to inherit the throne. However, his restless spirit and adventurous nature led him to seek military experience and fame. In 1832, at the age of 14, Joinville joined the French army and was sent to Algeria to quell the rebellion against the French colonial rule. He distinguished himself in several battles, including the Battle of Staoueli in 1835, where he was wounded. Joinville's bravery and leadership earned him the respect of his comrades and the admiration of his superiors. This photograph, taken between 1818 and 1900, captures the young prince in his military uniform, with the distinctive red feather in his hat, symbolizing his rank as a general in the French army. The image conveys a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting Joinville's commitment to his country and his military career. Joinville's military exploits in Algeria marked the beginning of a long and distinguished military career, which included serving as aide-de-camp to his father, King Louis-Philippe, and commanding the French forces during the Crimean War. He was also a prolific writer, leaving behind a body of work that includes memoirs, novels, and poetry. Despite his military accomplishments, Joinville's life was marked by tragedy and personal loss. He was exiled from France after the fall of the monarchy in 1848 and spent the rest of his life in exile in England. He died on January 3, 1900, in London, at the age of 81.
