EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a poignant moment in history as His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor, pays his respects at the Vimy Ridge memorial in France on the 1st of July, 1936. The Prince, dressed in military attire, stands before the imposing structure, which commemorates the 11,000 Canadian troops who lost their lives during the Great War, many of them during the successful attack on Vimy Ridge on Easter Monday, 9th April 1917. The trench stalemate of World War I had reached an impasse, and the capture of this strategic height by the Canadian Corps marked one of the first major victories for the Allied forces. The Prince's visit to the memorial was a significant moment in the commemoration of Canada's military history, and his presence served as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who fought in the war. Today, the Vimy Ridge memorial stands as a testament to the courage and determination of the Canadian military, and continues to inspire visitors from around the world.
