EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a moment of tender love and concern between Princess Alexandra, the Duchess of Fife and later Queen Consort of King Edward VII, and her firstborn son, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale. The image was taken in the late 19th century, during a time when the world was gripped by the devastating influenza pandemic of 1889-1892. The young prince, affectionately known as "Eddie," is seen lying weakly in his cradle or crib, while his mother stands watchfully over him, her expression reflecting a mixture of worry and determination. Born in 1864 in Denmark, Alexandra was the daughter of Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and Princess Louise of Hesse and by Rhine. She married Prince Albert Victor, the eldest son of the then Prince of Wales, in 1863, and the couple had three children together. However, it was their firstborn son who would tragically succumb to the illness, leaving his parents and the royal family devastated. Despite her personal loss, Princess Alexandra continued to carry out her royal duties with grace and dignity, eventually becoming Queen Consort of King Edward VII upon his ascension to the throne in 1901. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human side of royalty, and the enduring bond between a mother and her child.
