Princess Cecilie, born in 1911, was one of six children of Prince Philip of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg. She was the eldest sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who would later marry Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Cecilie's marriage to Hereditary Grand Duke Georg Donatus of Hesse and by Rhine, the heir to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, took place in Athens on February 9, 1931.
