EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting image captures Princess Elizabeth of York, the future Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, at the tender age of two years old. The sketch, adapted from a photograph by Marcus Adams, was published on the front cover of The Illustrated magazine in 1928. At this early age, the young princess already exhibited an air of regality and grace that would come to define her reign. Born on April 21, 1926, in Mayfair, London, Elizabeth was the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later known as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Raised in the shadow of her older uncle, King Edward VIII, Elizabeth's life was forever changed when her uncle abdicated the throne in December 1936, making her next in line to the throne. Despite the uncertainty and turmoil that followed her uncle's abdication, Elizabeth's childhood was filled with love and stability. She was educated at home by a team of governesses and tutors, and her parents ensured that she received a well-rounded education that included music, art, and riding. As the Second World War approached, Elizabeth and her family evacuated to Windsor Castle, where they remained until the end of the war. It was during this time that Elizabeth's relationship with her father deepened, and she began to take on more public duties, including making her first solo broadcast to the nation in 1940. This charming sketch of Princess Elizabeth, with her cherubic cheeks and bright eyes, offers a glimpse into the early life of a future monarch who would go on to reign for over 60 years, longer than any other British monarch in history. The image serves as a reminder of the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy, and the enduring strength and resilience of the Windsor family.
