EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a tender moment between Princess Ileana and Prince Mircea of Romania, two of the beloved children of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie. The image, dated 1915, shows the siblings playfully interacting with each other, offering a glimpse into their close bond before the tumultuous events that were soon to unfold. Princess Ileana, the youngest of the three daughters, was born in 1909 and would later marry Archduke Anton of Austria, Prince of Tuscany. Her brother, Prince Mircea, was born in 1913, and unfortunately, his life was cut tragically short. In 1916, at the height of World War I, Mircea succumbed to typhoid fever, leaving his family devastated. With enemy troops advancing across the country and chaos all around, the Romanian royal family was forced to evacuate their palace and could not return for two long years. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the innocence and happiness that existed before the harsh realities of war and loss. The image also highlights the strong connection between the siblings, who were beloved by their people and played an essential role in the history of Romania and the House of Bourbon-Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
