Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester (1773-1844), grand-daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, is depicted in this beautiful and elegant portrait painted around 1830. Princess Sophia Matilda was born on July 15, 1773, at Leicester House in London, the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, Charles William Frederick and his wife, Princess Mary of Modena. The Princess was known for her intelligence, wit, and charm, and was a favorite of her grandfather, Prince Frederick. She was educated at home by a governess and later by a French tutor. In 1790, at the age of 17, she married Prince Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, who later became the first king of Belgium. The marriage was not a happy one, and the couple lived separately for many years. Despite her marital troubles, Princess Sophia Matilda remained active in court life and was known for her generosity and kindness. She was a patron of the arts and supported various charitable causes. In 1830, at the age of 57, she died at her home in London. This portrait captures the Princess in her later years, with her mature features and regal bearing. She is dressed in the fashionable style of the time, with a high collar and long sleeves. Her expressive eyes and delicate features convey a sense of intelligence and sensitivity. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a small table and chair, drawing the focus to the Princess herself. This portrait is a testament to the beauty and grace of Princess Sophia Matilda of Gloucester, a member of the British royal family who lived during a fascinating period of history. It is a reminder of the complexities of royal life and the enduring allure of the monarchy.
