EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the annals of royal history, Princess Victoria, later known as Princess Royal of Great Britain and Crown Princess of Prussia, is depicted at her christening in the majestic Throne Room of Buckingham Palace on 10 February 1841. The young princess, who would later become Empress of Prussia, is dressed in a beautiful white christening gown, adorned with intricate lace and embroidery. Surrounded by her proud parents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as well as other members of the royal family, Princess Victoria appears radiant and serene. The christening ceremony was performed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, William Howley, marking the official beginning of the princess's spiritual journey. Born on 24 May 1840, Princess Victoria was the eldest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and this momentous occasion marked the start of her life as a member of the British and later Prussian royal families. As the future Crown Princess of Prussia, Victoria would go on to marry Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1859, becoming the mother of Kaiser Wilhelm II. This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of a royal christening, as well as the close bond between the young princess and her family. The Throne Room of Buckingham Palace, with its ornate decorations and regal atmosphere, serves as the perfect backdrop for this significant event in the life of one of the most influential women in European history.
