EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the historic moment of Queen Victoria's proclamation at Charing Cross in London on June 22, 1837. Following the unexpected death of King William IV, the young and inexperienced Victoria ascended to the throne at the tender age of 18. To announce her reign to the people, an elaborate ceremony was held at Charing Cross, where the Proclamation was read aloud by the Lord Chamberlain. The scene in this print is filled with a sense of anticipation and excitement. A large crowd has gathered to witness the historic event, with onlookers peering over the heads of those in the foreground. The Queen, dressed in a magnificent white gown and wearing the Imperial State Crown, sits regally in her golden state coach, pulled by six magnificent horses. Her consort, Prince Albert, stands by her side, his hand resting on the railing of the coach. The Lord Chamberlain, dressed in full regalia, holds the Proclamation aloft, ready to read it to the eager crowd. The Union Jack flies proudly from the top of the coach, and the Royal Standard is raised on the nearby flagpole. The scene is bathed in sunlight, with the clear blue sky and the vibrant colors of the crowd's clothing adding to the sense of celebration. This print, published in The Mirror in July 1837, is a testament to the excitement and anticipation that surrounded Queen Victoria's accession to the throne. It captures a moment in history that would shape the course of the British monarchy for decades to come.
