Birds The Art Of Ornithology Curved Elphick Feather Iridescent Jonathan Jonathan Elphick Latham Magnificent Paradisaeidae Passeriformes Passerine John Latham

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century print depicts the magnificent riflebird (Ptiloris magnificus), a vibrant and elusive passerine bird native to the rainforests of New Guinea. The magnificent riflebird is a member of the paradisaeidae family, known for their extravagant plumage and elaborate courtship displays. In this illustration, a male riflebird is perched on a branch, displaying his iridescent green and blue feathers. The curved, elongated feathers on his neck are particularly noteworthy, giving the bird its common name. These feathers are used in courtship displays to attract females. The print was produced during the height of the 19th century's fascination with the natural world, an era when the art of ornithology flourished. It was created by the renowned English naturalist and artist, John Latham (1740-1837), and was published in his multi-volume work, "A General Synopsis of Birds." The print is attributed to Jonathan Elphick (1781-1824), a skilled engraver who collaborated with Latham on many of his works. Elphick's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate feather patterns and textures depicted in the print. The magnificent riflebird was first described scientifically by Latham in 1790, making this print an important historical record of this fascinating bird species. Today, the magnificent riflebird remains a symbol of the rich biodiversity of the Pacific region and continues to captivate ornithologists and naturalists alike.
