EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph captures Queen Victoria Eugenie of Spain (1887-1969), the consort of King Alfonso XIII, in an elegant and regal pose, adorned with her stunning Battenberg tiara. Born as Princess Ena of Battenberg, she was a granddaughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and the first cousin of King George V. In 1906, she married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in a grand ceremony held in Madrid. Their union produced six children: Alfonso, Beatriz, Infanta Cristina, Jaime, Infanta Isabel, and Alfonso, Duke of Ankara. The early years of their marriage were marked by grandeur and opulence, with Queen Victoria Eugenie embracing Spanish culture and traditions. However, as the political climate in Spain began to shift, the royal family faced increasing challenges. In 1931, the proclamation of the Spanish Republic forced the royal family into exile, and the couple's marriage became strained. Despite the difficulties, Queen Victoria Eugenie remained devoted to her family and her Spanish heritage. She continued to wear her Battenberg tiara, a symbol of her royal lineage and her connection to her grandmother, Queen Victoria. This photograph, taken in 1923, captures the grace and resilience of a remarkable woman who navigated the complexities of royal life in the face of political upheaval."
