The Battenbergs lived at home with the Queen, and the children were close to their grandmother. Ena married King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906. The Queen and Ena are dressed in mourning for Prince Henry of Battenberg, Enas father. He had joined an expeditionary force to Ahsanti in Western Africa in 1895. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant photograph, Queen Victoria (1819-1901) is seen in deep mourning, seated beside her youngest granddaughter, Princess Ena of Battenberg (1887-1969). The image captures a moment of quiet reflection and closeness between the monarch and her beloved granddaughter, who was only six years old at the time. Princess Ena was the only daughter of Princess Beatrice of York and Prince Henry of Battenberg. The Battenbergs lived at home with Queen Victoria, and the children were particularly close to their grandmother. Tragically, in 1895, their father, Prince Henry, joined an expeditionary force to Ahsanti in Western Africa. There was no fighting involved, but he contracted malaria and died on board HMS Blonde off the African coast on January 20th, 1896. The Queen and her granddaughter are dressed in mourning attire, paying tribute to the loss of Prince Henry. Ena would go on to marry King Alfonso XIII of Spain in 1906, becoming Queen Consort of Spain. The image is a poignant reminder of the close relationship between Queen Victoria and her grandchildren and the impact of loss on the royal family. This photograph is a historical record of a significant moment in the lives of the British and Spanish royal families and provides insight into the personal lives of the monarchs and their families during the late Victorian era. The image is part of the extensive collection of historical photographs available at Mary Evans Picture Library.
