1789 Affair Antoine Crowds Enraged Faubourg Guards Maison Manufacturer Remarks Revolution Rioting Riots Suppress Reveillon

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity of the Reveillon Riots, which took place on 28 April 1789 in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine district of Paris. The crowds, enraged by inflammatory remarks published in the paper "Maison Royale" owned by paper manufacturer Jean-Baptiste Reveillon, had gathered to protest the high prices of bread and other essentials. Reveillon, who had recently increased the price of wallpaper, was seen as a symbol of the privileged elite's disregard for the struggles of the common people. The situation escalated when a rumor spread that Reveillon had insulted the crowd in a newspaper article. In an attempt to quell the unrest, the National Guard was called in to suppress the rioting crowds. The guards, seen here in the photograph, are shown attempting to restore order amidst the chaos. The tension between the people and the authorities was palpable, and the incident marked a significant turning point in the lead-up to the French Revolution. The Reveillon Riots were a pivotal moment in French history, as they highlighted the growing discontent among the population with the ruling classes. The event served as a catalyst for the French Revolution, which would begin just a few months later. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the complex social and political climate of late 18th-century France, and the forces that ultimately led to the overthrow of the monarchy.
