Reverend Samuel Schor as an eastern scribe
Wall Art and Photo Gifts from Mary Evans Picture Library
Reverend Samuel Schor as an eastern scribe
Postcard published by the London Society for promoting Christianity amongst the Jews - this is a picture of the Rev. Samuel Schor - dressed as an eastern scribe. He lived in Jerusalem and was a scholar on the Holy Land, organising an exhibition at the Royal Agricultural Hall of pictures and items from Palestine in 1907. This event also involved a host of individuals in clothing of the region - it is not hard to assume that Rev Schor was partaking of this himself and is seen here in this very costume! He later became the Vicar and surrogate of Christ Church, Queen Street, Blackpool. Date: 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative postcard, published by the London Society for Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews, captures the enigmatic figure of Reverend Samuel Schor as he assumes the guise of an eastern scribe. The photograph was taken during the historic exhibition held at the Royal Agricultural Hall in London in 1907, showcasing pictures and artifacts from Palestine. Schor, a renowned scholar on the Holy Land, was a central figure in this event, which brought together a diverse group of individuals dressed in traditional clothing from the region. In this image, Schor wears an intricately designed turban, a long robe, and carries a quill pen and scroll, embodying the ancient wisdom and knowledge of the eastern scribes. His presence at the exhibition was not merely for show, but a testament to his deep connection to the land and people of Palestine. Schor's dedication to the Holy Land extended beyond the exhibition. He later became the Vicar and Surrogate of Christ Church in Blackpool, continuing his work as a scholar and advocate for interfaith understanding. This postcard offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of the past, transporting us back to a time when the world came together to celebrate the cultural and historical significance of the Holy Land.
