EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic and romantic figure of British writer, Richard Le Gallienne (1866-1947). Le Gallienne was a prolific and influential literary figure of the late Victorian and early modernist periods, known for his poetry, short stories, and essays. His works often explored themes of love, beauty, and the supernatural, making him a beloved and influential figure in the world of romantic literature. Born in London on March 24, 1866, Le Gallienne was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his literary career in the late 1880s, publishing his first collection of poems in 1889. Over the next several decades, he would go on to publish numerous volumes of poetry, short stories, and essays, as well as translations of works by French and German authors. Le Gallienne was also a prominent figure in the literary world, serving as editor of the prestigious literary magazine, The Fortnightly Review, from 1901 to 1914. He was a member of the Savile Club, a private men's club for writers and artists, and was a close friend and associate of many prominent literary figures of the day, including Arthur Conan Doyle, Oscar Wilde, and W.B. Yeats. Despite his many accomplishments, Le Gallienne remained a somewhat enigmatic figure, known for his quiet and reserved demeanor. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, captures him in a thoughtful and introspective moment, with a pensive expression that seems to reflect the depth and complexity of his literary genius. Le Gallienne continued to write and publish until his death in 1947, leaving behind a rich and enduring body of work that continues to inspire and delight readers today. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the man behind the words, a man who captured the hearts and imaginations of generations of readers with his romantic and evocative writing.
