This image depicts Robert II the Pious (970-1031), a significant figure in the history of French royalty. Robert began his reign as co-ruler with his father, King Lothair II, in 987. After Lothair's death in 986, Robert assumed sole rule until 1026, when he once again became a co-ruler with his son, Henry I. Robert II is renowned for his piety and his efforts to strengthen the power of the monarchy. He was a devoted supporter of the Benedictine monastic reform movement, which aimed to revitalize the monasteries and promote spiritual renewal. Robert's patronage of monasteries and his own foundation of the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel helped to solidify his rule and establish a strong religious foundation for the kingdom. Despite his religious devotion, Robert was also a skilled military leader. He successfully defended his kingdom against external threats, including the Magyars and the Normans. Robert's military successes, combined with his religious patronage, helped to secure his legacy as a pious and effective ruler.
