Evacuated Evacuation Evacuees Keswick Sep16

EDITORS COMMENTS
September 16, 1940: Roedean School Evacuated to Keswick Hotel in the Lake District Amidst the chaos and uncertainty of World War II, the renowned Roedean School for Girls in Brighton, England, was forced to evacuate its historic premises due to the imminent threat of air raids. In this poignant photograph, students and staff of Roedean School are seen making their new home at the Keswick Hotel in the picturesque Lake District. The evacuation of Roedean School was a significant event during wartime, with over 400 girls and 60 members of staff relocating to the Lake District. The day-to-day running of the school on its new site presented numerous challenges, but the determination and resilience of the Roedean community shone through. The Keswick Hotel, with its stunning views of Derwentwater, offered a serene and tranquil setting for the girls to continue their education. Classes were held in various rooms throughout the hotel, with makeshift laboratories, libraries, and even a small theater created to accommodate the students' needs. Despite the unfamiliar surroundings and the hardships of wartime, the girls of Roedean School adapted admirably to their new home. They embraced the opportunity to explore the beautiful Lake District and even organized excursions to nearby attractions. This photograph captures a moment of hope and resilience in the face of adversity, as the Roedean community came together to create a temporary home and continue their educational journey during the war.
