EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative black-and-white photograph, three Hawker test pilots proudly stand beside the sleek and powerful Hawker Tempest Mk.V, a legendary fighter aircraft that played a pivotal role in the Second World War. From the left, we have Captain Hubert Stanford Broad, Squadron Leader Richard Vivian Muspratt, and Flight Lieutenant William "Bill" Humble. Hubert Stanford Broad (1914-1944) was a distinguished test pilot who joined the Hawker Aircraft Company in 1936. He flew numerous types of aircraft, including the Hurricane and Sea Hurricane, before becoming the Chief Test Pilot in 1941. Tragically, Broad lost his life during a test flight of the Tempest Mk.V on 22nd March 1944. Squadron Leader Richard Vivian Muspratt (1913-1998) was a highly decorated RAF pilot who joined Hawker as a test pilot in 1943. He flew the Tempest Mk.V in combat, scoring several victories against the Luftwaffe. Muspratt continued to fly and test various aircraft models for Hawker after the war, retiring in 1968. Flight Lieutenant William "Bill" Humble (1915-1996) was another accomplished test pilot who joined Hawker in 1942. He flew the Tempest Mk.V extensively, both in testing and combat, and was involved in the development of the Sea Hawker Sea Fury. Humble continued to fly and test aircraft for Hawker until 1959. This photograph captures a moment in aeronautical history, with three brave and skilled test pilots standing beside the iconic Hawker Tempest Mk.V. Their dedication and expertise played a crucial role in the success of this legendary fighter aircraft during the Second World War and beyond.
