EDITORS COMMENTS
One of two Royal Air Force Westland Whirlwinds from No.202 Squadron, based at RAF Leconfield, is seen here making a daring rescue mission off the coast of England in March 1974. The helicopters, identified by the letter "B" on their fuselages, were tasked with responding to a distress call from the French trawler Batiss, which had suffered engine failure and was drifting 40 miles east of Spurn Point. With the skill and expertise of the RAF crew, one of the Whirlwinds descended to the scene, hoisting the stricken seaman aboard and providing him with much-needed medical attention. The rescued seaman was then transported to Grimsby Hospital for further care. During the operation, the Whirlwinds made a refueling stop on the British Petroleum North Sea Gas Rig, WA, to ensure they had the necessary fuel to complete the mission and return to base. The successful rescue was a testament to the quick response and professionalism of the Royal Air Force and its helicopter crews, who were on constant alert to provide assistance in emergencies at sea. This historic photograph captures the moment of bravery and teamwork as the Westland Whirlwinds of No.202 Squadron carried out their lifesaving mission in the North Sea. The image is a valuable record of the vital role played by the RAF in maritime search and rescue operations during the 1970s.
