EDITORS COMMENTS
This image from the 1780s depicts the historic Balloon Ascent of the Italian aeronaut Vincenzo Lunardi, which took place on the Artillery Ground in London on the early September day of 15th, 1784. The scene is filled with a sense of excitement and wonder as the crowd of spectators, dressed in their finest attire, gather to witness this groundbreaking moment in transportation history. At the center of the photograph, Lunardi's famous hot air balloon, with its distinctive wing-like shape and large basket, stands tall and ready for takeoff. The aeronaut, clad in his pilot's uniform, is seen adjusting the telescope attached to the balloon's side, preparing for the ascent. The large oar-like apparatus at the base of the balloon was used for steering during the flight. The British flag flies proudly in the background, symbolizing the national pride and fascination with this new form of flight. The Artillery Ground, a popular location for ballooning experiments, provided an ideal setting for this momentous occasion. The spectators, eager to witness the wonders of the early days of aviation, are seen gazing up at the balloon with a mixture of awe and anticipation. This photograph, from the archives of The Royal Aeronautical Society (National Aerospace Library), offers a unique glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the seemingly impossible was made possible through human ingenuity and determination.
