EDITORS COMMENTS
This print commemorates the groundbreaking balloon ascents performed by Jean-Pierre Blanchard's protégé, Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier's successor, André-Jacques Garnerin, during the early 19th century. The illustrations depict five of Garnerin's most notable flights, each accompanied by the location of takeoff, passengers, and landing sites. In the top left image, Garnerin and his passenger, Snowden, ascended from Ranelagh on 28 June 1802, reaching an impressive height of 10,000 feet. Forty-five minutes later, they safely landed near Colchester, Essex. The bottom left illustration shows Garnerin and Locker's ascent from Lords Cricket Ground on 5 July 1802, which resulted in a landing at Chingford Green, Essex, just 15 minutes after takeoff. The central image marks Garnerin's first parachute descent in England, which occurred on 21 September 1802 from North Audley Street. He landed near St Pancras Church, just ten minutes after jumping from the balloon. The top right illustration details Garnerin's adventure from Vauxhall Gardens on 3 August 1802, during which he was accompanied by his wife, Madame Garnerin, and Glassford. A cat also descended by parachute partway through the journey, and the balloon landed on Hampstead Hill 62 minutes after takeoff. The bottom right image illustrates Garnerin and Glassford's ascent from Sydney Gardens in Bath on 7 September 1802. They landed near Mells Park, 16 miles from Bath, 110 minutes after takeoff. This print serves as a testament to Garnerin's pioneering spirit and the awe-inspiring feats of early aviation history.
