1. The First Flight of the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin: A Pioneering Moment in Aviation History The captivating image before you showcases a pivotal moment in aviation history: the first flight of the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, serial number 46-523, alongside its mothership, the Boeing EB-29B, serial number 44-84111, affectionately named Monstro. This photograph, a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of mid-20th century aircraft design, is an essential addition to any aviation enthusiast's collection. The McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, a single-seat, twin-engine, swept-wing jet fighter, was developed by the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation as a response to the United States Army Air Forces' requirement for a small, fast, and agile interceptor. The XF-85 was unique in its design, featuring a "flying wing" configuration and a distinctive inverted gull-wing canopy. The aircraft's distinctive appearance earned it the nickname "Goblin." The Boeing EB-29B Superfortress, designated as Monstro for this particular mission, served as the mothership for the XF-85 during its initial test flights. The EB-29B was an extended-range version of the renowned B-29 Superfortress bomber, modified to carry and launch the XF-85 using a retractable ramp in its belly. On October 29, 1948, the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, piloted by test pilot Bob Chilton, made its first powered flight, launched from Monstro. The successful test marked the beginning of a new era in jet aviation, with the Goblin eventually leading to the development of the McDonnell F-86 Sabre, a highly successful fighter that saw extensive combat service during the Korean War. This photograph encapsulates the spirit of innovation and progress that defined the post-World War II aviation industry. The first flight of the McDonnell XF-85 Goblin, alongside its mothership, Monstro, represents a significant milestone in the history of military aviation.
