EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment of impact as German Messerschmitt Bf110, U8+HL of 2./ZG 76, crashes into the ground at Cobham Farm in Lenham, Kent, on 20 September 1940. The Messerschmitt Bf110, also known as the "Me 110" or "Zerstörer" (destroyer), was a twin-engine, heavy fighter aircraft used extensively by the German Luftwaffe during World War II. The aircraft in this image, U8+HL, was a member of 2./ZG 76, a unit of the German Air Force's Zerstörer Geschwader 76 (Destroyer Wing 76). The photograph provides a stark reminder of the intense aerial combat that took place over the skies of southern England during the Battle of Britain. The Bf110 was a formidable adversary, with a top speed of over 300 miles per hour and heavy armament, making it a dangerous opponent for the Royal Air Force (RAF) fighters. However, on this fateful day, U8+HL met its end over the English countryside. The exact circumstances of the crash are not well documented, but it is believed that the Bf110 was engaged in combat with RAF Spitfires and Hurricanes during a large-scale air battle. Despite the best efforts of the German pilots, U8+HL was unable to evade the determined attacks of the RAF and was ultimately brought down. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the airmen of both the RAF and the Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain. It also serves as a testament to the bravery and skill of the pilots involved, as they fought for control of the skies over England.
