In this historic photograph, a group of aviation pioneers gathers in front of the first production Airspeed AS5 Courier, a groundbreaking aircraft designed by the innovative British engineering firm, Airspeed Limited. Among the distinguished figures is Neville Stack (possibly the man on the far left, wearing a hat), a renowned test pilot who played a pivotal role in the development and testing of the AS5 Courier. Standing next to Stack is Nevil Shute Norway (centre), a celebrated author and aviation enthusiast, who would later gain fame for his novels, including "No Highway" and "A Town Like Alice." Shute's extensive knowledge of aviation and engineering significantly influenced his writing, and he even flew test flights for Airspeed during the development of the AS5 Courier. To the right of Shute is A. Hessell Tiltman, an engineer and designer at Airspeed, responsible for the development of the AS5 Courier's wing design. Completing the group is Lord Grimthorpe (far right), a British aristocrat and aviation enthusiast who was a significant investor in Airspeed and a driving force behind the company's success. The Airspeed AS5 Courier, which made its first flight in 1934, was a significant achievement for the company, offering exceptional performance and versatility for its time. The aircraft was popular among private owners and was used for various applications, including passenger transport, mail delivery, and even as a trainer for the Royal Air Force.
