EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Albert Batchelor and his wife Gladys stand proudly in front of his Cierva C30A autogyro, G-ACWM. The image, taken in the 1930s, captures the spirit of adventure and innovation that defined the early days of aviation. Albert Batchelor was a British aviator and engineer who made significant contributions to the development of the autogyro, a type of rotorcraft that uses an unpowered rotor to provide lift. The Cierva C30A was one of his most notable designs, and G-ACWM was one of the first examples of this groundbreaking aircraft to be built. The Cierva C30A was a compact and versatile machine, capable of carrying two passengers and a pilot. It was powered by a 130 horsepower de Havilland Gipsy III engine and had a top speed of around 80 miles per hour. The autogyro's unique design offered several advantages over traditional fixed-wing aircraft, including the ability to take off and land vertically and to hover in place. Albert and Gladys Batchelor are seen here in front of their Cierva C30A, with Albert wearing a leather flying helmet and goggles, and Gladys in a stylish hat and coat. The background shows a grassy airfield, with other aircraft and hangars visible in the distance. The sun is setting behind them, casting a warm glow over the scene and adding to the sense of excitement and wonder. This photograph is a testament to the pioneering spirit of aviation in the 1930s, and to the visionary work of Albert Batchelor in developing the autogyro. It is a reminder of the thrill and adventure that comes with exploring new frontiers, both in the air and on the ground.
