1961 Dock Pembroke Presented Preservation Sunderland Trust Short

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the last Short Sunderland Mk.I, ML824 (Ae), of the Aéronautique Navale (French Naval Aviation) as it sits proudly on the dockside at Pembroke Dock, Wales, in 1961. The Short Sunderland, a legendary flying boat produced by Short Brothers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was a mainstay of the Royal Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II, serving as a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. By the early 1960s, however, the Sunderland was being phased out of service in favor of more modern aircraft. This particular aircraft, ML824, was presented to the Aéronautique Navale by the British government in 1958 and saw service with the French Navy until its retirement in 1961. In this image, we see the ML824 in its final days, having been preserved by the Pembroke Dock Preservation Society. The society, which was established in 1962, aimed to preserve and restore historic aircraft and vessels. The Sunderland, with its distinctive hull and four engines, is a testament to the ingenuity and engineering prowess of the past. Its presence on the dockside serves as a reminder of the important role that the Short Sunderland played in protecting the Allied forces during World War II and the enduring appeal of aviation history. This photograph, taken in 1961, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, capturing the last days of a legendary aircraft and the dedication of those who worked to preserve it for future generations to appreciate.
