EDITORS COMMENTS
Avro Shackleton AEW2 WR963, affectionately known as "Ermintrude," is a historic maritime patrol aircraft that played a significant role in protecting the United Kingdom's shores during the Cold War. This photograph captures the iconic plane in all its glory, showcasing its distinctive features that made it an essential asset for the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Avro Shackleton AEW2, or Air Early Warning 2, is a variant of the Avro Shackleton, which was initially designed as a maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft. However, the AEW2 version was modified to include an advanced radar system, allowing it to detect and track enemy aircraft at long ranges. This capability made it an invaluable asset for the RAF in providing early warning and air defense for the UK. WR963, named Ermintrude, is one of the 21 Shackleton AEW2 aircraft that were operated by the RAF from 1961 until 1974. The plane is seen here in its natural habitat, the hanger, with its distinctive red and blue livery, which was used to denote its role as an airborne early warning aircraft. The large radome under the fuselage is evident, housing the Maritime Search Radar 2 (MSR2), which provided the crew with long-range detection capabilities. Ermintrude's service history is noteworthy, having been involved in various operations, including the Falklands War, where it provided valuable support to the Royal Navy. This photograph serves as a testament to the Avro Shackleton AEW2's enduring legacy and the vital role it played in safeguarding the UK's security during a time of great geopolitical tension.
