Ham - a 37-pound chimpanzee - Americas first astronaut

Ham - a 37-pound chimpanzee - became Americas first astronaut when he was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Redstone (MR-2) suborbital flight on 31 January 1961. In a memo written the next day, NASAs Warren J. North noted: Ham appeared to be in good physiological condition but sometime later when he was shown the spacecraft it was visually apparent that he had no further interest in co-operating with the space-flight program. Date: 1961

1961 Aboard Americas Astronaut Canaveral Cape Chimpanzee Launched Mercury Pound Redstone Written January Memo Suborbital

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment when Ham, a 37-pound chimpanzee, made his mark as America's first astronaut. On January 31, 1961, Ham was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard the Mercury-Redstone (MR-2) suborbital flight, becoming the first living being to travel beyond the Earth's atmosphere in an American spacecraft. In a memo written the following day, NASA's Warren J. North reported that Ham appeared to be in good physiological condition after the flight. However, as seen in this image, Ham's interest in continuing his cooperation with the space program seemed to wane when he was later shown the spacecraft. The Mercury-Redstone 2 mission was a significant step forward in the early days of space exploration, paving the way for human spaceflight. This photograph is a reminder of the groundbreaking achievements of the space program and the curious journey of Ham, the intrepid chimpanzee astronaut.
