1500 Atlantic Attempted Crossing Entered F7140 Handley Transatlantic 1919
EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Handley Page V/1500 F7140 Atlantic, a historic aircraft that boldly attempted the first transatlantic flight in 1919. The Handley Page V/1500, registered as F7140 and affectionately known as the Atlantic, was a two-engine biplane designed by the British aircraft manufacturing company, Handley Page. In May 1919, the Atlantic, piloted by Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Brown, embarked on an ambitious journey to fly non-stop from Newfoundland, Canada, to Ireland. The daring duo aimed to achieve what many believed was impossible – crossing the vast Atlantic Ocean in an airplane. The Handley Page V/1500 was specifically modified for the transatlantic crossing, with additional fuel tanks and a larger wingspan to increase its range and endurance. The aircraft is depicted here, standing proudly on the tarmac, with its engines warmed up and ready for the historic endeavor. Despite facing numerous challenges, including harsh weather conditions and mechanical issues, Alcock and Brown successfully completed the transatlantic flight on June 14, 1919, landing in a bog near Clifden, Ireland, after approximately 16 hours and 28 minutes in the air. Their achievement marked a significant milestone in aviation history and demonstrated the potential of air travel as a viable means of transportation across oceans. This photograph serves as a testament to the courage, determination, and ingenuity of the pioneering aviators who pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible in the early days of aviation.
