EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, aviator Jean Batten is seen disembarking from her record-breaking aircraft upon her arrival at Croydon Airport in London on the 29th of April, 1935. Batten, a New Zealander, had just completed a solo and non-stop flight from Australia to England, covering a distance of over 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles) in her small, single-engine Percival Gull Wing monoplane, named "The Southern Cross." The achievement marked a significant milestone in aviation history, making Batten the first woman to fly solo and non-stop across the entire Southern Hemisphere. The daring journey took her just under 11 days, during which she faced numerous challenges, including extreme weather conditions and mechanical issues. Upon her arrival at Croydon Airport, Batten was greeted by a large crowd of enthusiastic spectators, who had gathered to witness her historic landing. Dressed in her flying gear and a fur coat to ward off the chill, she exuded a sense of determination and accomplishment as she stepped out of her aircraft, waving to the crowd. The photograph captures a moment of triumph and celebration, as Batten's ground crew assisted her down the steps of the plane, with a Union Jack draped over the wing in honor of her British heritage. The image is a testament to Batten's courage, skill, and determination, and serves as a reminder of the pioneering spirit of early aviation. This photograph is a valuable historical record of an important moment in aviation history, and a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Jean Batten, who continues to inspire generations of aviators and adventurers.
