1972 Batten Cyril Edgar Gull Peckham Percival Unveiling Zealand

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken on October 3, 1972, at New Zealand House in London, aviation pioneer Jean Batten (1909-1982) and aviator Edgar Percival (1902-1955) are seen together after the unveiling of a painting of Batten's iconic Percival Gull aircraft. The painting, created by renowned British artist Cyril Peckham, was commissioned to celebrate Batten's remarkable achievements in aviation. Batten, a New Zealander, gained international fame for her record-breaking solo flights during the 1930s. Her most notable accomplishment was becoming the first woman to fly solo from England to New Zealand in 1936, a journey she completed in just under 54 hours. She flew a Percival Gull monoplane, a versatile and reliable aircraft designed by Edgar Percival, which proved instrumental in her historic achievement. The unveiling ceremony took place in the presence of a gathering of aviation enthusiasts and dignitaries. Edgar Percival, who was also a New Zealander, played a significant role in the development of the Percival Aircraft Company and designed several successful aircraft models. His collaboration with Batten on her record-breaking flight further cemented the connection between them. The painting, which now hangs in the New Zealand High Commission in London, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of these two pioneering figures in aviation history. The Percival Gull, with its sleek design and innovative features, continues to be a symbol of the ingenuity and determination that characterized the early days of aviation. This photograph, capturing a moment in time when two remarkable individuals came together to celebrate their shared history, is a poignant reminder of the indelible impact they left on the world of aviation.
