1941 Apis Bombing Destroyed Generalfeldmarschall Hindenburg Junkers Luftwaffe Registered

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Junkers G38 transport plane, registration D-APIS, flown by Generalfeldmarschall Paul von Hindenburg of the Luftwaffe, taxing on the runway in April 1940. The Junkers G38 was a versatile and advanced aircraft, capable of both military and civilian use. However, by the outbreak of World War II, all Junkers G38s had been commandeered by the German military. In this image, the plane, with its distinctive Junkers cross insignia emblazoned on the fuselage, is preparing for takeoff, its powerful engines roaring in the background. The scene is serene, with the sun casting long shadows across the tarmac and the crew going about their duties with purpose and efficiency. However, this moment of calm before the storm was short-lived. Just over a year later, in May 1941, D-APIS was destroyed during a daring RAF bombing raid on the airfield where it was based. The Junkers G38, like many other aircraft of the era, became a casualty of the brutal and relentless conflict that was engulfing Europe. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the role that aircraft played in the events of World War II, and the human stories that underpinned the larger conflict. It also highlights the technological advancements of the time, with the Junkers G38 representing the cutting edge of aviation design and capability.
