The Convair SM-65 Atlas was the first operational ICBM for the United States military, marking a significant milestone in the development of nuclear deterrence capabilities. The Atlas A, a large, four-engine liquid-propellant missile, was carried to the launch pad by a transport aircraft, before being raised into an upright position for fueling and final preparations.
