EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in January 1914, depicts an extraordinary event hosted by the Hendon Aviators at the prestigious Royal Automobile Club. The occasion was an upside-down dinner, a unique and daring entertainment experience for the time. The guests of honor for this unconventional meal were Bentfield Hucks and Gustav Hamel, both notable figures in the early days of aviation. Standing to the left of the table, in the midst of the inverted scene, are Bentfield Hucks and Gustav Hamel, both dressed elegantly for the occasion. Hucks, a British aviator and engineer, had set several altitude records in balloons and airplanes. Hamel, a French aviator, was the first person to fly an airplane over the Alps and held numerous aviation records. Claude Grahame-White, the Chairman of the Hendon Aviators, is seen standing to the right of the table, overseeing the event with a smile. The Hendon Aviators were a group of pioneering aviators based at Hendon Aviator's Field in London, one of the earliest centers for aviation in the UK. The table, set upside down, is adorned with fine tableware and crystal glasses, adding an element of whimsy and intrigue to the scene. The room is filled with other guests, some of whom are standing, as they enjoy the novelty of dining in this unusual manner. The presence of a biplane in the background serves as a reminder of the close connection between aviation and the Hendon Aviators. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of early aviation and the spirit of adventure that defined the era. The upside-down dinner, an unusual event in its own right, serves as a testament to the camaraderie and innovation that brought together these pioneering aviators.
