EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the daring rescue of Major Money off the coast of Yarmouth in the early hours of July 1785. The scene is set against the backdrop of the tranquil moonlit sea, with the silhouette of the Norfolk coastline in the distance. Major Money, a British Army officer, had been on a diplomatic mission aboard a sailing vessel when it was caught in a violent storm. With the ship in peril, Major Money, along with Lieutenant Custus Rotulorum, took the courageous decision to escape in a makeshift cage suspended from a hot air balloon. The balloon, manned by Earl of Sandwich's flight crew, had been launched from Orford in an attempt to locate the stranded vessel. After a harrowing flight through the stormy night, they finally located Major Money and Lieutenant Custus clinging to their cage in the churning sea. The crew skillfully maneuvered the balloon close enough for the two men to be transported aboard, marking a truly providential escape from the treacherous waters. The image, taken from the Royal Aeronautical Society's archives, is a testament to the dedication and bravery of those involved in this remarkable rescue during the 1780s. The Honorable Major Money, who went on to make a full recovery, was deeply grateful for the efforts of the Earl and his crew, expressing his gratitude for their invaluable assistance in his official report.
