EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 17th century print depicts a royal officer of the French monarchy, as illustrated by Jean de Saint-Jean in 1675. The image was handcolored by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, and F. Laguillermie for the publication "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) by Georges Duplessis in Paris, 1867. The royal officer is depicted in full regalia, wearing a voluminous red doublet with gold lacing and a matching breechclout. His white collar and cuffs are adorned with intricate lace, and he wears a black hat with a white plume. The officer's sword hangs at his side, and he carries a pair of pistols in a leather belt. The print offers a glimpse into the fashion and military culture of the French court during the 17th century, a time of grandeur and opulence. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcoloring and lithography brings the image to life, transporting us back in time to an era of elegance and sophistication.
