EDITORS COMMENTS
This magnificent triumpal arch, standing proudly at the entrance to Banchory, Scotland, was a grand testament to the enthusiasm and warm welcome extended to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert during their royal progress to Balmoral in 1848. The arch, of gigantic dimensions, was entirely composed of heather, a native Scottish plant, symbolizing the connection between the monarchy and the land. The arch's most striking feature was the towering figure of the British crown, six feet high by five and a half feet wide, which surmounted it. The crown was intricately crafted from an array of dahlias and other flowers, adding a vibrant and colorful touch to the otherwise natural structure. The image captures the spirit of the Victorian era, with its grandeur and love for decorative displays. The royal progress to Balmoral was a significant event in Scottish history, and the construction of this impressive heather arch was a symbol of the people's devotion and pride in their monarch. The photograph, taken by the Illustrated London News Ltd in August 1848, provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of a bygone era. The intricate details of the heather arch and the regal figure of the British crown are a testament to the skill and artistry of the people of Banchory, who went to great lengths to welcome their beloved queen and consort in style.
