This stunning chromolithograph depicts the royal robes of Kaiser Ruprecht von der Pfalz (Ruprecht of the Palatinate) and his spouse, as depicted on their gravestones from the 15th century. The intricately designed garments showcase the grandeur and opulence of the royal court during this period. Kaiser Ruprecht, who ruled as King of Germany and King of Bohemia from 1400 to 1410, is seen wearing a long, flowing robe adorned with fur trim and intricate embroidery. His wife, whose identity is unknown, is depicted in a flowing gown with a high neckline and elaborate sleeves. The illustration was drawn by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903), a renowned German archeologist, art historian, and illustrator. Hefner-Alteneck was the director of the Bavarian National Museum from 1868 until 1886 and was known for his expertise in medieval art and costumes. The illustration was lithographed and published by Heinrich Keller in 1883 as part of Hefner-Alteneck's comprehensive work, "Hefner-Altenecks Kostüme, Kunstwerke und Anwendungen aus der Frühen Mittealter bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts" (Hefner-Alteneck's Costumes, Artworks, and Appliances from the Early Middle Ages to the End of the 18th Century). This work was a significant contribution to the study of medieval fashion and art history.
