EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Princess May of Teck, later known as Queen Mary, is depicted in her coming out year, around 1885. At the time, the young princess was just 18 years old and had recently made her debut into London society. Her elegance and beauty are evident in this portrait, which captures her poised and confident demeanor. Born on May 26, 1867, in Marlborough House, London, Princess May was the eldest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Teck. Her parents were German nobility, and she was raised in England, speaking English fluently and embracing British culture. In 1891, Princess May married the Duke of York, who would later become King George V of Great Britain and Ireland. Their union marked the beginning of a significant chapter in British history. The Duke of York was the second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, making Princess May the future queen consort. Their marriage took place at the Chapel Royal in St. James's Palace, London, and was attended by members of the British royal family and European nobility. The newlyweds were later presented at court, beginning their life together as the Duke and Duchess of York. This photograph, taken around the time of her engagement, offers a glimpse into the life of a young princess on the cusp of becoming a queen. The image is a testament to her grace, beauty, and the importance of her role in British history. Princess May's life was marked by dedication to her family, her country, and her charitable endeavors. She was a beloved figure in British society, and her influence extended beyond her role as queen consort. Her legacy continues to be celebrated, making this photograph an essential piece of royal and British history.
