EDITORS COMMENTS
: Saint Hiltrude, also known as Hildetrude, was a revered French saint and recluse who lived in the late eighth century. Born into a noble family, she is believed to have been raised in the Abbey of Leoben in the Ardennes region. At a young age, Hiltrude felt the call of the religious life and left her home to live as a hermit in the forest of Liessies. The exact date of Saint Hiltrude's birth is unknown, but it is believed that she lived between the 8th and 9th centuries, with an approximate death date of around 790. She chose to live in a small cell, surrounded by nature, where she spent her days in prayer, meditation, and penance. Despite her seclusion, Saint Hiltrude was known to have a profound impact on those who came into contact with her. She was said to possess the gift of healing and was often visited by pilgrims seeking her intercession. According to legend, she once healed a man who was blind in both eyes by touching his face with a cloth that had been touched to the cross. Saint Hiltrude's reputation for holiness spread far and wide, and she became a popular figure of veneration in the region. A chapel was built near her hermitage, and after her death, she was buried there. Over the centuries, the site became a place of pilgrimage, and a monastery was eventually built on the site. Today, Saint Hiltrude is remembered as a patron saint of the blind and those suffering from eye diseases. Her legacy continues to inspire those seeking spiritual guidance and inner peace. This image of Saint Hiltrude, a recluse in the forest of Liessies, serves as a reminder of the power of faith and the beauty of nature. It invites us to reflect on the simple pleasures of life and the importance of seeking solace in the presence of God.
