EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, circa 1760, captures the enigmatic ruins of the Sepulchre of Septimius Severus, a monumental mausoleum built between Palatine Hill and Caelian Hill in Rome during the 3rd century AD. The sepulchre, also known as Septizonium or Sepulcrum Sepimii, was erected in honor of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and his family. Septimius Severus (r. 193-211 AD) was a significant figure in Roman history, known for his military campaigns that expanded the Roman Empire's borders and his patronage of the arts. The sepulchre, with its impressive size and intricate decorative elements, is a testament to the grandeur and power of the Roman Empire during this period. The ruins depicted in this photograph show the sepulchre in a state of decay, yet the majesty of the ancient structure still shines through. The mausoleum's name, Septizonium, means "seven-storeyed" in Latin, and it is easy to see why, as the ruins still display the remnants of seven tiers of Corinthian columns that once surrounded the monument. The sepulchre's location between Palatine Hill and Caelian Hill, two of Rome's seven hills, further adds to its historical significance. The hills, which have been inhabited since ancient times, offer a breathtaking backdrop to the ruins and provide a glimpse into the rich history of Rome. This photograph, taken circa 1760, offers a unique perspective of the Sepulchre of Septimius Severus, allowing us to appreciate the beauty and history of this ancient monument while also contemplating the passage of time and the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire.
