EDITORS COMMENTS
Sextus Pompeius, the eldest surviving son of the legendary Roman general Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus (Pompey the Great), is depicted in this ancient Roman portrait. Born in 75 BCE, Sextus was just a young boy when his father was assassinated in Egypt in 48 BCE, marking the end of the First Triumvirate and the beginning of the final phase of the Roman Republic. Despite his young age, Sextus would go on to play a significant role in the turbulent political landscape of the late Roman Republic. In 41 BCE, he allied himself with Sextus Julius Caesar, the adopted son of Julius Caesar, against Mark Antony and Octavian (later known as Augustus). However, after Sextus Julius Caesar's death, Sextus Pompeius switched allegiances and joined forces with Antony and Cleopatra, the Queen of Egypt. In 36 BCE, Sextus Pompeius led a rebellion against Octavian, who had become the sole ruler of the Roman Republic. Sextus controlled the Mediterranean Sea with a powerful fleet, making it a dangerous adversary for Octavian. The war between Sextus Pompeius and Octavian lasted for several years, but ultimately, Octavian emerged victorious. Sextus Pompeius was captured in 35 BCE and executed, bringing an end to the rebellion. This striking portrait of Sextus Pompeius, with its penetrating gaze and intricately detailed toga, offers a glimpse into the life of a man who played a pivotal role in the final days of the Roman Republic. Despite his tragic end, Sextus Pompeius remains an intriguing figure in the annals of Roman history, a reminder of the complex political dynamics that shaped the ancient world.
