Born in 1825, Sher Ali was the son of Dost Mohammed, a former ruler of Afghanistan who had previously established friendly relations with Russia. In contrast to his father's tense relationship with the British, Sher Ali sought to strengthen Afghanistan's ties with Russia, leading to increasing conflict with the British Empire. The Emir is depicted here wearing a traditional Afghan coat, adorned with intricate embroidery and a fur collar, over a long shirt.
