EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the breathtaking view of the Bosphorus Strait from the deck of HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy. Built between 1912 and 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, HMS Marlborough was named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. After entering service prior to the First World War, the battleship was assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet. In the 1910s and 1920s, HMS Marlborough played a significant role in various international conflicts, including the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920) and the Greco-Turkish War. The image, taken circa 1923, showcases the picturesque coastline of the Bosphorus Strait, with its quaint houses, villas, and settlements nestled along the shore. The serene beauty of the scene contrasts sharply with the military might of the British battleship anchored in the foreground. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the Mediterranean region during the 1920s, a time of political and social upheaval, as well as the enduring power and presence of the British Royal Navy.
