Sir Arthur Herbert Dyke Acland (1847-1906), a prominent figure in British politics and education, is depicted in this striking photograph. Born on March 22, 1847, in Bridgwater, Somerset, Acland was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his political career as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) for Taunton in 1874, holding the seat until 1885. In 1886, he was appointed as President of the Local Government Board under Prime Minister Gladstone, a position he held until 1892. Acland's commitment to education was evident throughout his career. He served as President of the Board of Education from 1892 to 1895, where he implemented significant reforms to the education system, including the introduction of free education for primary school children. He also played a key role in the establishment of the University of Birmingham in 1900. Acland's political beliefs were deeply rooted in liberal values, and he was a strong advocate for social reform. He championed the cause of women's suffrage and supported the abolition of the Corn Laws. In 1895, he was knighted for his services to education.
