EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving, Sir Henry Morton Stanley and Dr. David Livingstone are depicted in a historic moment at Ujiji, Tanganyika, in 1871. Sir Henry Morton Stanley, a British-American explorer and journalist, had been sent by James Gordon Bennett, the publisher of the New York Herald, on a mission to find the Scottish missionary and explorer, Dr. David Livingstone, who had not made contact with other Europeans for some time. Stanley's successful meeting with Livingstone on November 10, 1871, was a significant event in the history of African exploration. In the image, Stanley and Livingstone are shown seated, each engrossed in a newspaper. Stanley, on the left, wears a pith helmet and holds a cane, while Livingstone, on the right, is dressed in missionary attire. The scene exudes a sense of camaraderie and relief, as the two men connect after years of isolation. The background shows African villagers and native boats, highlighting the cultural contrast between Europe and Africa. This engraving, published in the Illustrated London News on December 23, 1871, captures a pivotal moment in the lives of these two explorers. Stanley's discovery of Livingstone marked the height of the European "Scramble for Africa," and both men went on to make significant contributions to the exploration and documentation of the African continent. This image is a testament to their perseverance, courage, and the power of human connection in the face of adversity.
