Sir John Downie (1764-1834): A British Military Commander in the Spanish Service During the War Against Napoleon Sir John Downie, a distinguished British military officer, is depicted in this historic photograph, circa 1813. Downie's career in the military spanned over three decades, during which he served in the Dutch, British, and Spanish armies. However, it was his service in the Spanish army, during the Peninsular War against Napoleon, that brought him significant recognition. The battle took place on April 26, 1811, when Downie, then a Spanish general, led his troops to a decisive victory against the French forces. He was knighted by King Ferdinand VII of Spain for his services during the Peninsular War. After the war, he returned to Britain and was appointed Governor of Gibraltar.
