Sir Joseph Jekyll (1663-1738): A Prominent Figure in English Law and Politics This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir Joseph Jekyll, an eminent figure in English law and politics during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in 1663, Jekyll rose to prominence as a lawyer and was appointed Master of the Rolls in 1714, a position he held until his death in 1738. The Master of the Rolls was the head of the Civil Division of the Court of Common Pleas and the Court of Exchequer, making Jekyll one of the most senior judges in the English legal system. His tenure as Master of the Rolls was marked by his dedication to upholding the rule of law and his commitment to improving the administration of justice. Jekyll's legal career began in the late 1680s, and he quickly gained a reputation as a skilled and capable lawyer. He was appointed King's Counsel in 1692 and served as a Member of Parliament for several constituencies throughout his career. Despite his success in the legal profession, Jekyll is perhaps best known for his role in the impeachment of the notorious Whig politician, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, in 1701. The impeachment proceedings, which were instigated by Tory politicians, including Jekyll, were based on allegations of corruption and mismanagement of public funds. The trial, which was held in the House of Lords, ultimately resulted in Marlborough's acquittal. Despite the outcome of the trial, Jekyll's reputation as a skilled and principled lawyer remained unblemished. He continued to serve his country in various capacities, including as a Member of Parliament and as a judge, until his death in 1738. This portrait, which captures the essence of Jekyll's dignity and authority, serves as a testament to his remarkable career and his enduring legacy in English legal history.
